Coming to the 2006 FIBA World Championship, Japan hosted this event and this event was organized by International Basketball Association and in coordination with Japan Basketball Association(JABBA) and 2006 Organizing Committee. This event was organized at 5 different venues of the nation.
For this event 24 nations participated for the first time from six federations. The champion for the year was Spain and that had received a Gold Trophy. The runner-up nation for this championship is Greece and the Most Valuable Player for this championship is Pau Gasol from Spain. By this achievement, Spain got the first world Championship. USA is the successful nation which had won 3 gold medals, 3 Silver medals and 4 bronze medals.
