Intake of vitamin supplements has become essential these days to maintain the required levels of vitamins in the body. However, many people have some common myths of these vitamin supplements which are quite wrong. Have a look on them.

  • One of the most common myths of vitamin supplements is that they can replace healthy eating. For instance, having junk food and taking vitamin supplements is of no use. It should be remembered that vitamin supplements are only the aids of the diet, however, healthy diet should be taken compulsorily.
  • Taking too many vitamin supplements is better. This is an important myth which has to be considered. Remember, vitamins are generally essential in trace amounts and hence, they are referred as micro nutrients. Taking too much supplements may lead to overdose which results in various side effects.
  • It is safe to take individual vitamins and minerals. Upon knowing the importance of a vitamin, one prefers to take the specific vitamin supplements. When these individual vitamin supplements are taken along with multivitamins, it may lead to overdose and arise various health issues. Also, individual vitamins and minerals may interact with each other affecting the absorption. Therefore, they should be taken only under the guidance of a qualified nutritionist.
  • Vitamins and supplements are not medication. Though they are not technically considered as medication, when taken in appropriate doses, they have the same qualities. However, they should be taken with suggestions of a doctor.
  • You need not take a multivitamin when you eat fruits and vegetables. It is a very common misconception. Though this may be true to some extent, it doesn't pertain to today's lifestyle and is well true a long time ago. With industrial farming practices and pollution, diet with good-quality fruits and vegetables is also not sufficient to meet nutrient demands. So, regardless of the diet, high-quality multivitamins should be taken.
  • All vitamins are the same. It is believed that vitamin supplements of various brands are same, however, this is not true. Certain brands, some of the inexpensive ones, are of low-quality and include synthetic ingredients. This may not be beneficial to your body. It is also considered that expensive supplements are better, which may need not be true always. Certain expensive supplements may be of poor quality. So, when shopping for vitamin supplements, research more and choose ones which are of good quality.
