Demographics And Their Effects On Online Shopping

Demographics are the characteristics of a human population, it includes gender, race, age, income, disabilities, mobility, educational attainment, home ownership, employment status, and even location, etc. Online shopping is the process of buying the products directly from the owner with out any intermediaries through the internet. The online shopping is showing growth in US and international markets. The trends in the online shopping are effected by the above said demographics.

According to an online survey, conducted on 1,200 US Internet users by Ernst and Young, both men and women selected Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, and CDNow as their favorite top three websites. Both men and women selected computers, books and CDs as their favourite categories. The encouraging news about online shopping is that the number of online shoppers increased and the retailers are adjusting their merchandising according to the tastes and preferences of the customers. Adults generally make spontaneous purchases and elder people stick to few sites. There is a direct relation between the income levels of the households and the money spent on the online shopping.

The effect of the demographics on the online shopping is very large as the buying patterns of the people vary, so the online marketers should know the demographic profiles and they have to design their offerings according to these demographic profiles which in turn help the online marketers to identify and segment the online consumers which will enhance their focus eventually leading to financial growth.
